Both methods of eyelash extension application are great. But when starting a lash career it's very important to learn classic lashing first. Classic lashing is your foundation to lashing overall. This is where you will learn Isolation, diameters, lengths, curls etc. These are all very important in order to keep the integrity of your clients natural lashes intact. Which as a Lash Artist, this should be one of your number one goals. Without learning the classic technique it can be very difficult to create healthy volume looks. We recommend taking a classic lash class first and then moving on to Hybrid, Volume and Mega volume which are all advanced techniques.

Classic Eyelash Extensions
Classic Eyelash Extensions as suggested by their name are ‘Classic’. They are natural, beautiful and simple eyelashes applied in the ratio of 1:1. 1:1 Ratio means one extension on one natural eyelash. By doing this you can achieve a natural yet beautiful look. Classic eyelashes can give you a natural and subtle look everyday look. Classic eyelashes come in different thicknesses from (10-18mm) and in different materials and styles. Classic eyelash extensions take up to 1.5 to 2 hours.

The different types of lash curls
J-curl is the most natural curl, meaning it has a lesser curl than the other types.
B-curl is a simple curl that offers a little more lift than a J-curl.
C-curl is the most popular curl, can be used on curled or straight natural lashes
D-curl is a popular, more dramatic curl.
Volume Eyelash Extensions
Volume eyelash extensions are multiple lashes applied to one single natural eyelash at a time using very fine extensions (.03, .05 &.07mm). If two eyelash extensions are applied to one natural lash it’s described as 2D, if three eyelash extensions are applied to one natural eyelash, it’s described as 3D etc.
This method is also known as Russian volume. The lash extensions used in this method are significantly thinner ( Usually a 0.03 diameter lash extension is used) than the lash extensions used for the classic lash method.
Volume lashes are lighter, fluffier and give the client a fuller look. Volume lashes are perfect for clients who don't have a lot of lashes, have sparse lashes, bald spots or just want a more dramatic look without having to use a thicker lash.
Classic V/S Volume Eyelash Extensions
The biggest difference is in the result you can achieve with each – classic lashes won’t add much volume but will add length. Classic eyelash extensions offer you an even lash line that opens up the eye. It helps you look made-up right from the moment you wake up, and builds on your natural lash beauty.
Classic lashes are applied individually on a 1:1 ratio, hybrid typically uses 30% classic lashes and 70% volume lashes (variable ratio), and volume ranges from 1:2 to 1:15 generally.
Another difference to take into consideration is the cost of application. Classic lashes require little preparation, so are a much more affordable option if budget is important to your client.
This is because volume lashes require a higher level of skill, more eyelash extensions are used (3d-15D per natural lash) and creating perfectly symmetrical fans with tight bases is an art that can't be rushed, as the fans are handmade.
Volume eyelash extensions vary from an extremely natural look which adds some length and volume (2D and 3D lashes), to a very dramatic and full look (5D up). 5D and higher may look like you are wearing false lashes all the time.

Classic lashes are more of an everyday look but the lash industry has seen a spike in volume lashing. More and more women now want the voluminous fluttery look and they want different curls, textures and sizes.
2021 is all about new designs and texturizing your work. Symmetrically perfect mega volume is on its way out. Clients are looking for more expressive designs. Having more options to choose from.
Mix different curls, diameters, multiple lengths and really experiment with your styles. At the end of the day your customized designs will make you stand apart from the crowd. Be different and experiment. Whether you use hand made volume fans or pre-made fans - its all about adding them to individual lashes across the lash line.
